More Niko...

Posted by Arna:

These shots are slightly out of focus, but they show the other views of the sculpt posted below, so I figured people might like to see them. I took these shots with a Minolta point-and-shoot camera, in black and white film, then scanned them in colour.

The model, Niko, is a latin dancer who performs from time to time at Lula Lounge in Toronto. I think he'd been dancing till late the night before, because he'd come in to our Saturday morning classes and sit for us and look more and more sleepy as the session wore on. I think he was a good model, sleepy or not.

Wow. I've never met Niko in my life, but it's an absolute perfect likeness. I'd recognize him anywhere.

It's so real it scares the crap out of me. What a great sculpt.

lee-roy. Thanks. I'm attempting to be a little less realistic with the current work. It's challenge to design a piece that is less like the thing you see in front of you.

sumeet. Thanks! Your work is truly inspired and we appreciate the feedback from you. Glad you like it.

Uli. Haahaa! I'm honoured by the compliment. Doing a portrait sculpt is funny. I've only done a few, however I notice that there seems to be a moment at which if it's working, the face starts to feel like the actual person's face. It's a bit like an invasion of privacy... I'm not sure how exactly to explain that.

Beautiful work. This could very well be a picture you took at the ROM. Thanks for sharing Arna. You are of many talents.

Would just like to add: Did you happen to get the clay from the banks of the Vtlava in Prague? If you're familiar with the story of Golem, you know what I'm getting at. And I ain't talkin bout no LOTR.

Also, I thought I had you in my blogroll, but for some reason I didn't. Anyway, you're in there now. :)
