Thief Of Always

We're just back from Ottawa Animation Festival. Coolman! did not win a prize but we got some very good feedback at the screening. The winner in our category: 'Animated Television Series For Adults' was the hilarious Harvey Birdman. We were honoured to be in the competition. More about the weekend in a future post.

We recently saw Uli Meyer's lineup for The Thief of Always on his blog and thought we'd post these rough development sketches of Mr. Hood that John did in 1994. He was the AD for director Robin Budd on this feature animated film which unfortunately was never completed.

Beautiful artwork JVB! A man of many talents! I don't ever remember seeing your verions of Mr. Hood! Fantastic sketches! My favorite page has got to be the last one! It is a crying shame that it never came to be.....so much beautiful artwork, so many talented people....I had just started at Nelvana in 94....it really created a buzz at the studio!

Would love it if you can share more artwork or stories!

Best regards,
Mike

Hello Arna, ooh, I remember working on ideas for this project back at Uli's. I met up with Robin Budd again when he was in town for the voice recording of "Return to Neverland."
Such a good concept, why oh why do they never happen.
Sooper concepts of yours, but I especially like your late night self portrait...
Micklee from sunny England.
See ya in a couple of weeks...

Hey Arna, I never saw those either. While we were working away on this in London, we never saw much of what was done in Canada. Great to see these sketches. I'll try to convince the mighty Limbolo to post some of his designs for 'Hood'.

Thanks to everyone for the kind comments! It was fun to dust off these old concept designs and share them with you. Yes, it was a huge shame that this film never made it past the leica stage. It would've been exciting to see this Mr. Hood come to life. Ah well... JVB
