Persepolis!

A gripping tale told from the point of view of a ten year old Iranian girl. Now a 2D animated movie made in France and directed by the original writer/artist Marjane Satrapi, and Vincent Paronnaud. Hopefully an English language version will be released soon. You'll find some intriguing (French language) videos on the Persepolis MySpace site.
Update, July 17_07: Cast announced for the English language version include the voices of Sean Penn and Iggy Pop. (read more from Animation Magazine)

Yeah I saw some work on this a few months back, it looks great. It's like seeing the graphic novel come to life. I highly recommend the book!

PERSEPOLIS was a sensation at the Cannes Film Festival-I didn't see the movie yet but I went to the post screening party on the beach at midnight- Catherine Deneuve was there!
The film has been successful at the French box office too & will hopefully pave the way for funding for more 'adult' oriented animation fare. Joann Sfarr is already prepping an animated adaptation of one of his comic books.

Hi Matt,

Yayyy!! That Persepolis was a hit at Cannes is very good news indeed. And holy mackerel.. what was Catherine Deneuve doing on that beach? I can imagine that she wore a glam gown and lounged elegantly on the sand...

We're looking forward to more out-of-the-mainstream forays into the world of animated feature films in the near future. I am only now getting to know Joann Sfarr's work. It will be interesting to see what they create based on this artists' very simple and expressive style of comic art.
