Prismacolour portraits...

Posted by John.

This first one I drew in my parents living room in the summer of '79. The T-shirt is from the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa, where I'd worked the previous year. The image on the shirt is by the Canadian artist Dennis Burton.

This second one I drew from a photograph my dad took of my friends and I as we were clowning around at my cousin's bridal shower. At the time, we had a 'punk' band called The Clumps. We were a true punk band in that only one of us -- and it wasn't me -- knew how to play an instrument. Can anyone recognize the painting behind me?

These remind me of the Royal Tennenbaums. I'm really liking them. They make me want to get out the coloured pencils. Love the shadow up the wall in the second one...

Hey Doodlers! Been buried with work so haven't been over here in a while. Like the new look to the joint! I think every self respecting artist should pay some dues in a punk band with a name that could also be a disease (My aunt suffered from The Clumps...she had to pee from a hole in her belly through a straw into a Tim Hortons cup....Had to be Tim's for some reason. Somebody brought Coffee Time into the house one Christmas and she sprayed the living room to show her displeasure. Family is tough.) What instrument did you not play at all. For me, it was guitar. I'm still not playing guitar in a punk band in my head.
Best wishes.

Thanks, everyone! Glad you like 'em! Not sure how these drawings remind you of the Royal Tennenbaums, Richard, but I will definitely take that as a compliment. :) And please do break out the those Prismacolors! Walleye, I 'played' drums. In fact, I still play 'em with a band called 'The Noodlers,' made up (mainly) of ex-Nelvana directors and artists. The Clumps (or Das Klumpen) played Sex Pistols and Stones tunes...badly! Needless to say, we were 'soft core' punks. Like I said, Drazen, I based the second drawing on a photo my father took in our living room and I added the 'ominous' shadow. Seems to have been a running theme that summer. That Jung/Munch influence, I guess... Can anybody help 'onemanpunkband' with the painting on the wall behind me? :) There's a double clue in my name! JVB

nice stuff. that would be a Van Gogh, wouldn't it? of that Dutch bridge (whose name escapes me) right?

so what is a "soft core" punk? is that like shoegazer Minor Threat? or Cub doing the DKs?

Wow ! New template , new banner! Very nice, and i like your prismacolour portrait, especially the first one, it's very expressive.
...I had to draw a lot of comics pages about a new story , so i was really busy!
oh, the picture is the bridge of Langlois(Arles) V. Van Gogh( one of myi favourite with Tolouse Lautrec).
Cheers!

I'm impressed not only by the art but also the fact that you hung on to it for nearly thirty years! I normally chuck everything in the bin after a few days. Running a studio means that we have to legally hang on to artwork for five years. After that it's in the skip. Not enough room in London Town that is affordable.
Love the drawings a lot!

Glad you like our blog, Kipp! Thanks, Michael! And that is a Van Gogh, the bridge at Langlois (as Thomas points out below). 'Soft core' punk would be kids from Oshawa pretending they're punk (not to mention musiscians). In other words, the Clash clashed. The Jam jammed. The Clumps merely...clumped. And thanks to pbcstudios, Thomas and Uli for their kind comments! Arna and I have saved EVERY PIECE OF ART we've produced over the past four decades or so...'course we have no room to sleep, eat (or move for that matter), but one must sacrifice for one's art...mustn't one? :) JVB

I have only a couple of sketches I did in high school that I regret having actually kept! At least your work is good, John. Very nicely done, I love that your pencils look very painterly to me. Thanks for sharing your past with us.

Thanks for dropping by, felixpsutnik! We look forward to a 'wee smackeral!' And thanks for the 'painterly' comment, Smook! Of course these drawings were made well after my high school years. They would have been done between my third and fourth year at OCA, I believe. Gracias, Marco Antonio! JVB
